NIER NOTES - NIER

Pre-Game

- Described as an "Unyielding Protagonist"
- A Widower, his wife passed away from the Black Scrawl disease
- Loves his daughter, does anything to protect her
- Looks intimidating, but is actually kind-hearted with a strong sense of honor
- Is also a great worker, which causes the villagers to pay him for dangerous jobs
- Skilled with One-Handed Blades
- Works relentlessly to find a cure for the black scrawl disease his daughter has
- Nier doesn't like fighting shades, unless it's for a job or they attack, since he thinks they feel too much like humans, and they bleed the same

Pre-Timeskip

- Despite not being home all the time, he takes good care of Yonah
- Listens to Yonah's dreams, stories, and picks up books for her at the library if she asks
- Feels helpless about helping Yonah, like he's not doing anything to help her feel better
- Most days he feels like a failure, but Popola tells him he's "the finest father a girl could hope to have."
- Takes any requests
- Is thankful for everything Popola has done for him
- Doesn't want Yonah to worry about her sickness
- His only concern is to help Yonah get better
- "Nothing will stop me, I will fight for Yonah until the end. Until the very end."
- Sends letters home to Yonah
- Likes telling Yonah stories
- Prefers dangerous jobs
- Feels like he has to pay the village back somehow
- Gets angry if Yonah leaves the house
- Extremely worried about Yonah when she goes to the Lost Shrine
- Ignores everything if Yonah is in danger
- A soon as he saves Yonah he's less angry about her leaving the house and more worried about her well being
- Moves faster than expected, according to Weiss
- Wishes he could have the Black Scrawl instead of Yonah
- Thinks singing a song without knowing the words is stupid
- Will kill any shade in the way of him finding the Sealed Verses
- Weiss comments that it's a reckless plan, but Nier doesn't care
- Nier thought about using Weiss for kindling
- Weiss comments that he needs to treat magical beings with more respect
- Not scared of shades, just cautious
- Isn't patient when it comes to the Sealed Verses
- Kaine's foul mouth is about what Nier expected
- Doesn't get mad at Kaine for kicking him
- Doesn't care that Kaine is half shade, since she's half human too
- If she goes full Shade, Nier won't hesitate to cut her down like the rest
- Knows he needs to get stronger before fighting the giant shade
- Is extremely happy when Yonah says she's feeling better
- Is guilted into things by Yonah easily
- Helps people that are in trouble, since he saves a solider fighting shades and helps the two kids at the Junk Heap get new supplies for their shop
- "They have a rough life, I just wanna help."
- Doesn't care about helping the kids more
- He wants to help because growing up without parents is tough
- Knows the kids' mother is dead
- Still gets stunned by Kaine's mouth
- Defends Kaine from the villagers
- Thinks human lives are worth more than anything
- Helps Kaine live, and invites her along
- Keeps inviting Kaine into the village, since he wants her to meet Yonah
- Likes the idea of "more killing, less thinking"
- Doesn't know what the Sealed Verses are, and doesn't care, but he collects them anyway, since it could save Yonah
- He states that he'd even collect crystal horse manure if that's what it takes
- Is a typical father, and is very defensive of Yonah was a possible boyfriend pops up
- Says that he can't say no to Yonah's request
- When Weiss brings it up, Nier quickly tells him they're not going to discuss is
- "I'm just a big guy that kills things."
- "A father could never hate his daughter."
- When the village is attacked, the first thing he asks is for someone to get Yonah to safety
- He never runs from a fight
- Even when severely injured, he still fights for Yonah

Post-Timeskip

- Can use two handed swords and spears
- Only lives to hunt shades and collect information on the Shadowlord
- Has a strange obsession with fighting Shades now, when before he felt strange about killing them
- Says he'll support Emil no matter what he is
- Doesn't want to lose anyone else
- Comforts Emil when he gets his new body
- Doesn't like being called a hero
- Is much stronger than he was before, commenting on how his blade feels lighter than when he fought one of the bosses before
- Doesn't take any offense to Kaine saying "You look like shit."
- Isn't great with his hands, but managed to make Kaine a Lunar Tear
- Doesn't agree with the villages choice to make Kaine and Emil sleep outside, and is outraged about it
- Feels selfish that he didn't realize Kaine slept outside all this time
- Knows that anger won't solve anything
- Takes the blame for them getting kicked out of the village too
- Still wanted to apologize, even if he didn't agree with the decision
- Couldn't believe how much of an ass he was being to Popola
- Is disappointed when stuff is too easy
- Wants the villagers to change their mind about Emil and Kaine
- Thinks that Kaine having to sleep outside is crap, and that it shouldn't happen
- Decides the best way to find out where the Shadowlord is is to kill every big Shade
- Knows that Yonah is still alive, even if it doesn't seem like it
- Since the leader of the shades kidnapped Yonah, he doesn't care about killing them anymore. This is shown when he runs into a sentient shade and he kills it without second thought
- Says he'll kill the shade in the Junk Heap, and anyone that gets in his way
- Is ready to jump into a random hole to chase the shade, even though he doesn't know what to expect
- Knows that revenge is a fool's errand
- Doesn't stop to think about things, only rushes forward, claiming he won't get Yonah back if he tries to make sense of every little thing.
- Nier likes killing shades, the movie, the game
- Comforts Emil again, when he destroys The Aerie, and tells him to never look back.
- Truly believes Emil saved their lives
- Wonders if you can eat scorpions, instead of finding them dangerous
- Likes to joke around with friends. When the King of Facade is getting married, Nier tells him he has his sympathies
- Keeps reassuring Kaine that's it's fine that she's at the wedding
- Doesn't like talking about his wedding
- Tells the King of Facade that "Finding light in the bad times is the mark of a good leader."
- Also that "a man works better when he has something, or someone, to fight for," saying it's a subject he knows well
- Won't let the King go into the Wolf Den by himself
- Decides they have to avenge Fyra
- "If even one shade is here, I have to kill them all!"
- Respects Fyra's wish to protect the king
- He doesn't care if he's walking into a trap, as long as Yonah is in there
- Doesn't want to leave the King behind, until Kaine finally snaps him out of it
- Tries to get Popola to stop, even after fighting her and Devola, since he doesn't want to fight her
- Lets Kaine beat him up after Emil sacrifices himself
- "You want me to understand your sadness? You think I'm going to sympathize with you? I swore to protect my daughter and my friends. If someone puts them in danger, they must stand aside or be cut down!"
- "Headstrong idiot."
- Exceedingly stubborn man
- "I have something to defend! I have a reason to live!"

Ending C (Canon Point)

- Tries to help Kaine fight through going berserk
- Refuses to kill Kaine when she asks
- "You taught me something Kaine. You taught me that a man must become strong to protect those he loves. Believe in me Kaine. I'm going to save you! I swear it!"
- When he's told there's a way to save Kaine, he says he'll do whatever it takes, just like he did with Yonah
